What did you want to be when you were growing up?

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Well, wanted to be a lot of things when I was growing up and believe none of those dreams flourished.

For a long time, I wanted to be an Air hostess, just loved how elegant those ladies were in the movies, skinny and tall.

Then  fell in love with Mariah Carey and  even kept a notebook with all her songs written (do you remember having a song book). At that time, I wanted to be a singer gosh, even sorry young me we have no singing talent. LOL

The next phase I wanted to be a damn good lawyer and this was inspired by the show Law and Order back in the day. Loved those shows and loved how the people testifying fell apart.

Recently visited that dream because of Suits. I said out loud while we watching an episode with my family, you know I wanted to be a lawyer while I was growing up.

My daughter asked, then why didn’t you? Honestly didn’t have an answer.

That was a good question and it got me thinking. Why the hell did I not become a lawyer? May didn’t fight hard enough for my dreams or maybe the financial situation at home got to me.

Wanted to be a lot of things while growing and now I am 30 something with no real career because I let people’s opinions of me hold me back.

Even though I studied Hotel and Catering Management, ended up working as a receptionist because the hospitality hours are insane especially when you have a baby.

Let me just say there in no multitask-er like a person who works as a receptionist/ Admin Assistant and it is seriously not for the weak. To some people, it is just a bottom position and can’t even call it a career.

Recently something was said to me, which really hurt so deep and I can’t get the words out of my mind. Your salary will always be a receptionist salary it won’t go anywhere.

Never felt so small in my entire life. Besides this being said to my face and me reeling in anger and hurt.

It has inspired me to start my own company in Virtual Assistant and going to use my 6 years’ experience in the Reception/Admin Assistant area. To build and grow my company because you know what, I am more than a Receptionist.

    What a way to turn around an insult that was intended to break you down! There is no expiry date on our dreams and you can still do it. Receptionists are actually the people that know the business more than anyone else – you get to build relationships and network with people at all levels – many executives built up their careers this way. When I was growing up, * also wanted to be an air hostess, lol. Then when I got to varsity I wanted to be a radio journalist (a blogger is not too far from that right?). When i graduated I never got a job in the field I studied but eventually my passion ended up finding me in my late twenties. It’s never too late.

    I struggle with understanding my 4 children, none of whom know what they want to be when they grow up, including the one doing engineering! I was 5 when I decided to be a nurse, that dream has only wavered now in my 50″s, I have taught nursing and worked in an Emergency Department, worked for an amazing GP. I used to hate it when people would ask why I didn’t become a doctor! I am still in the health industry sort of, My business is now coaching people on meal planning and I probably will make more money than I did as a nurse but I am not doing it for the money, I am doing it for passion. As Oprah Winfrey said “Live your best life” and to do that you must follow your passion.

      Wow I guess its true what @Thando said dreams don’t have an expiry date. You found your passion at 50 so be patient with your children it takes time for some of us to find our path. 🙂 🙂

    When I was growing up I wanted to be Miss South Africa ?? which meant getting into modeling, but that dream died long before I even got to std8 and had to make subject choices which determine the rest of my life , by that time I had decided I wanted to be a Nurse so there I was doin biology and maths and what ever else to see me to that nursing career , finished matric life happened bottom line is I too ended up working as a Receptionist and personal assistant for good number of years at different companies, and went thru exactly that moment of feeling like I failed myself , so at the age 28 I decided I want to go bk to school and become a Nurse , I worked my butt studies to the bone at the age in 2015 I graduated at the top of my class (along with a few others) yeeeeeeh finally I felt I had achieved what was once only just a dream today I’m qualified Enrollled Nurse , but have not worked as a Nurse not a single day I’m 30 something now and unemployed mother of one and left a paying job to chase a dream. Now I too have a little business which had nothing to do with the what I had initially wanted to be …

      Life has its own plans for real, eventually after all the detours we go through we will get there. I was also feeling like I failed myself towards turning 30.

    Excited for this new adventure you’re going to embark on! I always wanted to be a teacher. And, lo and behold, I became a teacher. But a teacher salary is no different also not a stellar salary so I’m trying to find other ways to make a little extra cash!

    Hey, it really took my thoughts out.. even I wanted to be a lawyer, coz I had ample energy arguing people;).. Somehow that didn’t go very well with my parents & ended up being a management professional. But frankly speaking every week I get a dream of doing something else.. I wanna try every profession of this world it seems;)

    Good for you starting your own business!! And you are absolutely more than a receptionist! You are a mother, a provider, an influencer. Some people think a career or job defines who they are. I don’t believe in that definition for myself. Great post!

    I was weird. I never had any aspirations as a kid, or any desire to do one specific thing. No pull whatsoever. I kinda still dont. Just do what I have to.

    When I was growing up I wanted to be a rock star! LOL Which came to pass, though not in the literal way. Abundance is in the Divine plan for all of us and the way you get there does not matter. Congrats on launching your own VA business and I wish you much success!!

    I always wanted to be a doctor. I’m not currently doing that or on the path to be doing so. Life happened and it no longer seems feasible. I do hope to find myself in the healthcare field one day soon.

    Congratulations on your new venture! As a kid, I wanted to be a singer, lawyer and ended up by entering into the corporate world. But I really love my work as a travel blogger. It has given me a new perspective to live my life!
